The Eurocodes will become the Europe
wide means of designing Civil and Structural engineering works and so, they are
of vital importance to both the design and Construction sectors of the Civil
and Building Industries.
The first two of the finalised Eurocodes, covering the
Basis of Structural Design and Actions due to self-weight and imposed loads,
have been published during 2002, having successfully passed through the CEN procedures.
The
two codes are the first of what is planned to be 57 parts covering Actions,
Steel, Concrete, Composite Steeland Concrete, Timber, Masonry and Aluminium,
together with Geotechnical design and Seismic design.
The codes become the
means to design construction works and to check their conformity to the Essential Requirement
n°1 Mechanical resistance and stability (including such aspects of Essential
Requirement n°4 Safety in use, which relate to mechanical resistance and
stability) and a part of Essential Requirement n°2 Safety in case offire,
including durability, as defined in Annex 1 of the Construction Product Directive.
Knowledge of the program-me and development of the Codes is, therefore, essential
for the relevant practitioners. The work of drafting the Eurocodes was originally
under the aegis of the Commission, but was transferred to CEN as the official
European standards body. After an Examination period, when CEN published versions
of the Eurocodes as pre-standards (ENVs), they are now nearing the completion
of the conversion to full European Standards (ENs). Important matters relate to
the adoption of the Eurocodes by Member States for use under their regulation.
This has involved the introduction of some flexibility, across border, by means
of what are known as Nationally Determined Parameters.
